Hessle office based, Lead Process Engineer, Humberto Ilja, has recently become a Chartered Engineer through his membership of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. Having dual Venezuelan and French nationality and having gained his degree in Chemical Engineering in Caracas, the Institution required him to demonstrate his qualifications by producing a technical report on a project that he has worked on. Humberto chose a project on a high pressure onshore gas facility in Venezuela, where he was responsible for the design of the blowdown and relief system. He said, “It was a challenging project since the results of the calculations determined the selection of piping material for the whole venting system”.

Prior to joining On Line Design two years ago, 41 year old Humberto worked in the Process Department of Technip, a multinational engineering company specialising in oil & gas and biofuels projects. Before that, he had some experience in the food and packaging industry when he worked for Tetra Pak, in addition he had the opportunity to venture into management consulting for a couple of years trying to bring the process concept into different non-industrial companies. His first job after gaining his degree was in the Venezuelan state own-company PDVSA, one of the world largest oil refineries where he worked as a Process Engineer.

Humberto loves to travel whenever he has chance, and in his first year in the UK he clocked up over 20,000 miles in his car at the weekends and bank holidays with his wife and ten year old child. After two years of living in UK, Humberto said that the biggest challenge for him is to deal with the typical (and sometimes unpredictable) British weather and that sometimes he misses the Caribbean!
